New KU-CRL research on reading instruction for adolescent struggling readers has yielded interesting results and led us to develop a reading program called Fusion Reading(TM). The program includes strategies for increasing reading motivation, decoding, word identification, and fluency; reading comprehension strategies for paraphrasing, summarizing, generating questions, drawing inferences, and recognizing text structures; a vocabulary component focused on learning vocabulary in context and through class discussion; and an instructional methodology based on explicit instruction with extensive practice and feedback. This session will share the Fusion Reading curriculum and our research findings. Participants will be asked to help conceptualize the professional development model and activities used to support implementation of Fusion Reading at the school and classroom level.

Some students just do not have the prerequisite skills for the Error Monitoring Strategy, and others have not learned the complex rules for capitalization and punctuation required on their state competency exams and college entrance exams. This session will focus on three computerized programs for teaching strategies associated with capitalization rules, comma rules, and other punctuation rules. Participants will learn about the strategies themselves and will try out the programs on their computers. (Please remember to bring a laptop if you have one!) Participants also will learn how to provide workshops on the programs and instruct teachers on their roles in using the computerized instruction format. Registration fee includes three CDs and handouts.

Are you planning to integrate SIM in your college/university classes? Have you already created SIM syllabi for your college/university classes? If you can answer “Yes” to both of these questions, then this session is for you. This discussion will focus on five specific higher education needs: (1) How to integrate the Strategic Instruction Model in course syllabi through syllabi sharing, planning, and creating; (2) How to embed SIM objectives in your course syllabi along with the national and state professional content standards (e.g., NCATE, CEC, GLE, GEE); (3) How to evaluate/assess SIM course requirements in your classes (e.g., SIM assignment rubrics); (4) How to update the challenging school culture to make room for SIM (i.e., changing from ineffective to effective research-based teaching practices); and (5) How to create a continuing SIM support network for higher education faculty. Please bring to this session any SIM higher education documents that you have created and would like to share with the participants. We encourage you to bring laptops and flash drives for saving documents.
