Paula will present her latest work on vocabulary instruction via computer. Her presentation will focus on two CD programs: Word Smith (a program for teaching students the meaning of prefixes, suffixes, and roots) and Word Sleuth (a program for teaching students to use the Word Mapping Strategy to predict the meaning of words). Jean will present her work on the strategic instruction of writing mechanics via computer. Her presentation will focus on three CD programs: Capitalization, Commas, and Other Punctuation. They will both provide instruction on how to use the programs and instruct teachers about the programs as well as their research results. Please bring your laptops so you can try out the programs!

    Hello!

How do these presentations relate to the Preconference presentation called “Computerized Writing Strategy Instruction”? Do I need to try to attend both?

    Thanks!

  2. Jean Schumaker says:

Hi Mandy: Good question! In the preconference session we will be covering the three writing strategy CDs in detail for three hours, including how to conduct professional development sessions. Participants will become very familiar with the strategies and should feel comfortable giving pd sessions after this session. In the other presentation later in the week, Paula will be covering her new vocabulary CDs for half of the time. I will be giving a brief overview of the writing CDs in the other half of the time. Paula will present first so if you attend the preconference session on writing strategies, you would be able to leave after Paula’s part. Jean

Thanks, Jean! I’m excited about attending your session! It’s great fun to anticipate the SIM Conference! See you all soon!
